The research vessel Helmer Hanssen at Svalbard

Helmer Hanssen operates for large parts of the year in the Barents Sea and the waters around Spitsbergen. There are through the year long periods of darkness, bad weather and cold – what most people would call a challenging arctic climate. The service also comes with days where the nature experiences are overwhelming, even for those who have been involved in this for a long time.

This year’s April/May trip for the University Center in Svalbard (UNIS) brought experiences for the memory book.

UNIS – The university centre in Svalbard is a Norwegian research and educational institution on Svalbard, founded in 1993. It is the world’s most northerly educational institution, and is located on the south bank of Adventfjorden, at the very bottom of Longyeardalen in Longyearbyen.
