Helmer Hanssen, far north in the service of research
It is still winter in Svalbard, but the light and the sun are back. Again this year, we are taking the University Center in Svalbard (UNIS) to the St Jonsfjord, surrounded by spectacular nature.
Late winter is referred to by many as the most beautiful time this far north – full winter and (soon) sun around the clock.
UNIS teaches and conducts research in arctic biology, geology, geophysics and technology. UNIS is organized as a joint-stock company owned by the Ministry of Education and Research that conducts research and teaching at university level. Half of the students and staff are foreign, and the working language at UNIS is English.
Students studying biology, geology, geophysics or technology can apply for a semester at UNIS during the third and final year of their bachelor’s degree. UNIS also has a number of courses aimed at master’s and doctoral students.
